This new Corps of Engineers had charge of the surveys of canals, roads, the Great Lakes, rivers and harbors. During the years between 18, Major Abert made surveys of the Atlantic Coast and America's inland frontier. In 1829, he was appointed to the position of Chief of the Topographic Bureau, and ten years later in 1838, he was promoted to Colonel and Commandant of the new Corps of Topographical Engineers. The 71st graduate of West Point, as a civilian employee of the War Department, he volunteered as a private for the defense of Washington, DC, and was later brevetted Major, Staff Topographical Engineers, after the Battle of Bladensburg, Maryland, August 24, 1814. ![]()
